Alfalfa Ranch Custom Home
Bend, Oregon

conceptual design
3,200 sq ft
Project Description
Imagine relaxing on the deck of your custom home sipping wine as the sun sets behind the Cascade Mountains. That’s the experience the owners of the Alfalfa Ranch Residence requested as we started programming and designing their new home. We that moment in mind, we got to work.
The result is a 3,200-square-foot, four-bedroom custom home located on a rural property in the ranching and farming community of Alfalfa, Oregon, just east of Bend. The design features an expansive deck, as well as a reverse-living floor plan that takes advantage of Cascade Mountain and high-desert views from the living area. The home’s entry and interior stair is designed to connect the ground floor and the upper living spaces.
The decks allow for outdoor entertaining and, yes, sipping wine as the sun sets.
Case Study
The following chart includes design challenges our architectural team faced on this project, as well as the solutions we integrated into the the home.
Challenge: | Solution: |
Access expansive mountain views from every living space in the home | Utilize a “reverse living” concept: views are maximized in the main living spaces by placing them on the second floor |
Provide a strong connection between the first floor entry and main second floor living spaces | A two-story entry with a feature staircase links the first floor entrance with the second floor great room |
Fit four bedrooms, a home office, a game room, a great room and various utility spaces into a 3,000-square-foot home | Shared spaces and usable circulation space, like a pass-through mud room that includes boot storage, result in a compact home that maintains a spacious atmosphere |
