Worthy Brewing Observatory & Dining Expansion

Bend, Oregon

Project Description

The Worthy Brewing addition is one of those out-of-this-world projects that occasionally lands on a firm’s doorstep. After assisting the client with a kitchen addition and remodel, Worthy Brewing challenged Ascent to reach for the stars and design a dining room addition that combined a rooftop water spa, deep-space-observing telescope, and seating for at least 100 patrons. The spa didn’t make the cut, but the observatory with its telescope is still a prominent feature, as is a 2,400-square-foot second-floor deck overlooking the Cascade mountains. Extensive detailing went into developing the concept, including custom furniture and casework, lighting, circular staircases, and unique bi-fold garage doors.

This fun and exciting project has been featured in The Portland Mercury and Cascade Business News.

Beermuda Triangle

We designed this additional dining space to incorporate several features of Worthy Brewing, including viewing windows looking into the brewery. Glass bi-fold doors allow this space to be indoor/outdoor as weather permits.

Observatory Silo

Worthy Brewing patrons can climb the spiral staircase and stop at the second-floor patio to enjoy a pint, or – when it’s open – head up to the observatory to take a look a the night sky.

The Pièce De Résistance

We collaborated with experts from the University of Oregon, Pine Mountain Observatory, and Sunriver Observatory to understand the requirements for housing a high-tech telescope. For example, the new telescope structure must be seismically independent from the existing structure. Additionally, the collaboration team discussed light pollution and options to reduce it, allowing our team to create a design with the most optimal conditions.

Hop Majal

In addition to more dining space, the client wanted banquet space for special occasions. We designed this room to create a communal atmosphere, great for parties of all kinds. Interior design features, such as the lighting, create points of interest while paying homage to the celestial theme of the entire remodel and addition.

Outdoor Bar

To make use of all the new space, we designed an outdoor bar that can be used when the hydrolic bi-fold doors are open. The bar looks into the Beermuda Triangle, which has open views of the brewing operation.

Room with a View

Worthy is well situated on the east side of town, so we took advantage of the western views of Pilot Butte and the Cascade mountain range, which can be enjoyed from the second-story patio, as well as the climb up to the observatory.

Business Branding

Along with our other interior design assistance, we used Worthy’s logo throughout the remodel to reinforce the business’ brand.

Star Bar

To provide even more space for patrons to enjoy Worthy brews and dishes, this second-story patio was added. Fire pits and hanging heaters mean it will be comfortable even with a chill in the air (which we all know is pretty common in Central Oregon).

Hopservatory

Just outside the Hop Majal is the Hopservatory (are you noticing a theme with the room names?). Since the telescope is only usable at night, this educational area was designed for folks to enjoy all day long, displaying current images of the sun and earth.
